Pain in the wrist and hand can be from injury to the local muscles, joints and ligaments but pain is often referred from problems in the neck and thoracic spine (upper back). When the neck or thoracic spine is involved it sometimes gives rise to pins and needles, weakness or numbness, but these can also result from a compression of nerves at the wrist. This is what happens in a carpal tunnel problem.
